Benefits of Fluoride

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps maintain strong, healthy teeth. It helps prevent decay by making the surface of your teeth stronger and more resistant to cavities.

Cavities are caused when the bacteria in the mouth feed on the available sugar from leftover foods and drinks. When these bacteria consume sugars, they release acids, which break down the outer layer of the tooth, called enamel. Overtime, this creates a cavity. Cavities often develop between the teeth and in the presence of deep grooves.
Here are two ways fluoride contributes to healthy teeth.

1. Prevents Tooth Decay
Fluoride helps to remineralize tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. This process not only helps to repair early stages of tooth decay but also strengthens the enamel, reducing the risk of future cavities.

2. Reduces Sensitivity
Regular use of fluoride blocks the tiny pathways between the outer surface of the tooth and the nerve. This can help reduce the sensation of pain associated with hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks.

Incorporating fluoride into your daily dental care routine is a simple yet powerful way to protect your teeth and maintain a healthy smile. You can receive fluoride through toothpaste, mouth rinses, or professional treatments. When using fluoride while brushing your teeth with toothpaste follow these guidelines. (ADA, 2024)

  • Children under 3 years old: As soon as baby teeth appear, gently brush them with a small, soft-bristled brush and a little fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice)
  • Children aged 3 to 6: Around this time, children begin learning to take care of their own teeth. They should brush twice daily for at least two minutes each time, using a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Brushing in the morning and evening is usually best. Supervise your child to make sure they use the right amount and don’t swallow too much toothpaste.
  • Older children and teens: As they grow, continue to encourage kids to use fluoride toothpaste in their twice-daily brushing routine.
  • Adults: Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes each time, or as directed by your doctor or dentist. Brushing in the morning and evening is usually best.

Remember to consult with your dental professional to determine the best fluoride regimen for your needs.
