Dry Mouth
Dry mouth increases the risk of cavities and infections, which makes it even more important to maintain good oral hygiene.
Causes of dry mouth
The production of saliva is reduced with age. Medication, diseases, stress or head/neck radiotherapy can also contribute to dry mouth. Your saliva normally helps cleanse the mouth from bacteria. With less saliva, the teeth become more vulnerable to caries (cavities). In addition, the soft tissues in your mouth are often sensitive and susceptible to infection.
If you suffer from dry mouth, your oral hygiene is of extra importance. Avoid eating between meals and rinse your mouth with water often. Ensure that you have regular dental checkups.
